Auction House Secrets

As a young Mage in my early levels it took me while to make gold in World of Warcraft. I roamed around the streets of Stormwind stoney broke for many a level with pitiful gear and no mount. The truth was that I spent far too long hanging out with mates in the Pig and Whistle instead of learning to trade on the Auction House.
Now listen, friend, if this sounds like you then don’t despair. You are not alone. The truth is that the player propping up the bar next to you is just as likely to be as broke as you – if not more so.
It’s not your fault. Blizzard does not teach us how to make gold. We’re told at an early stage of the game to simply knock a few mobs on the head and loot the corpses. No wonder we’re all broke! Grinding and questing are the ways most players learn to collect gold in Warcraft. And while they are both ways to make a little gold they are also time consuming and grinding can be just plain boring.
Now pay close attention, friend, for here’s a tip: the quickest and easiest way to make gold in World of Warcraft is to learn how to master the Auction House, for it is here that all commerce of the gold economy takes place. Without a basic understanding of the Warcraft gold economy you’ll be forever starved to gold and destined to wander Azeroth without mount or decent gear. You’ll always be a noob amongst champions.
Now many a player struggles with the Auction House and it is easy to understand why. With literally thousands of items listed every day a player can be forgiven if they get a little confused. Basically, most players need to ask these basic questions:

What do I sell

What’s it worth

What quantity to post

How long to post

When to post
Even if players think they have something to sell, it can be very hard to work out its true worth i.e. its ‘market value’. To do this, a player would have to scour the Auction House listings – of which there are thousands – and find the most frequently quoted price on any given day (called the median price) and average this over several days for any given item.
If this sounds like hard work, it is!
Fortunately there are a number of very good addons that can automate the whole process. The most venerable – and probably still the best – is Auctioneer which can still be downloaded free of charge. If you do nothing else, friend, heed my advice and download this addon – it will transform your game.
But even if you download this addon, you’re just getting started. The real game begins when competing with the hundreds of other players using the same tool.
